Year: 2020 - 2022
“I can’t breathe”. These were the words that shattered hearts all around the world. They were the last words heard from George Floyd, an African American man who died during an encounter with a police officer in Minneapolis in May 2020 during a very rough arrest. His need to breathe became a metaphor reflecting the simple right for humans to be able to have air for their lungs and words for their expressions.
Floyd’s death became a symbol of injustice whether caused by nature, like in the case of the Covid-19 pandemic, or by political and socioeconomic reasons.
These series of ceramic artworks are dedicated to him in addition to individuals and groups who feel that they cannot breathe due to the injustice they face in their daily lives.
